Legal and financial records of the Wormeley family, 1766-1814.

The papers contain statements, bills of exchange, bonds, accounts, notes, drafts, deeds, agreements and letters. Names represented in tne correspondence and documents include John Wormeley; Ralph Wormeley; Callendar & Henderson of Fredericksburg; Archibald Gracie; John Randolph Grymes; Isaac Kent; Willoughby Morgan; Hercules Mulligan; Captain Presley N. O'Bannon; Mann Page; Burr Powell; Forrest S. Stoddert. Ralph Wormeley's service in the Royal North Carolina volunteers is documented. Family slaves are occasionally mentioned in passing including "four Negro fellows" taken in custody by the sheriff of Frederick County in a suit against John Wormeley and an 1814 division of the dower Negroes in John Wormeley's estate. There are also letters concerning an Isaac Allen, an illegal squatter or tenant on Wormeley land.

Hercules Mulligan was a tailor and spy during the American Revolutionary War. Born in Ireland, he emigrated to New York City with his parents and graduated from King's College (Columbia University). He was friends with Alexander Hamilton. When George Washington spoke of his need for reliable information from within New York City in 1776, after the Continental Army was driven out, Hamilton recommended Mulligan due to his placement as tailor to British soldiers and officers....

Archibald Gracie emigrated from his native Scotland to Petersburg, Va. and then finally settled in New York City where he became a successful shipping magnate. Gracie purchased land along the East River and in 1799 built a Federal style mansion that today is the home of the mayor of New York.
